Stone Forest (Shilin) 石林
Located about 90 km from Kunming, the Stone Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage site made up of towering limestone formations shaped over millions of years. Known locally as “the First Wonder of the World,” it’s a must-see geological marvel. Best explored on foot — wear comfy shoes!
Dianchi Lake 滇池
Dianchi Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan. Locals come here for boating, cycling, and relaxing by the shore. Visit Haigeng Park for sweeping lake views and a chance to spot the famous red-beaked seagulls that migrate from Siberia every winter.
Daguan Park 大观公园
Located on the northern shore of Dianchi Lake, Daguan Park is known for its stunning lakeside pavilions and the “Longest Couplet in China,” a poetic inscription describing Kunming’s beauty. It’s a peaceful spot for a lakeside walk or a boat ride, especially at sunset.

Yuantong Temple 圆通寺
This ancient Buddhist temple, dating back over 1,200 years, is Kunming’s most famous temple. It blends traditional architecture with serene gardens and ponds. You’ll often see locals lighting incense or meditating by the lotus ponds — it’s a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city.

Explore the Flower and Bird Market (花鸟市场)
One of Kunming’s most vibrant markets, this lively spot overflows with flowers, bonsai, songbirds, and local handicrafts. It’s a window into everyday Yunnan life and the city’s deep love for nature. Great for photography and picking up souvenirs.
Visit the Yunnan Ethnic Village (云南民族村)
Situated by Dianchi Lake, this open-air cultural park showcases the traditions, architecture, and music of Yunnan’s 25 ethnic minorities. It’s both educational and fun — with performances, craft workshops, and lakeside walks.
Hike the Western Hills (西山 Xīshān)
Just west of Dianchi Lake, the Western Hills offer spectacular views of the lake and city below. Take the cable car from the Yunnan Nationalities Village, then follow the scenic trail to Dragon Gate (龙门 Lóngmén) — a cliffside grotto carved by monks centuries ago.

GETTING AROUND Kunming
Kunming has an efficient public transportation system that makes it easy to navigate.
Metro
Kunming’s metro system is modern and expanding rapidly. Line 1 connects the city centre with Kunming South Railway Station, making it easy to reach other Yunnan destinations. It’s an affordable option with signs and announcements available in both Chinese and English.
Buses
The extensive bus network can be challenging for non-Chinese speakers but offers another way to explore the city.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are readily available at reasonable prices. Ride-hailing apps like Didi provide an English interface for added convenience.
